Try doing braid outs, twist outs, or bantu knots. Hopefully these styles will agree with you hair type.

I know I'm late but if you have natural hair you can do anything you want. You are only limited by your imagination. I buy those short combs to help style. I do Mohawks or have it going to one side; different types of buns. I even look at relaxed hair styles and mimic those. One month I was on a roll; every week my hair was different and I did it using twists. I am going to share a secret. Take your two-stranded twists and then braid them down. In the morning, un-braid your hair (do not un-twist the twists) the results will be a very unique wave like a twist- braided combo. This will also help if your hair is falling in your face. I get so many compliments on my hair and I know people are trying to figure out what I did to get that look. When I am asked I tell but people never ask just stare or ask if they can touch it. Oh! And I have very coily hair, someone told me that I have strong African hair (4b); I took that as a compliment. Just for those who may think I have a certain type of hair.

LOL, I can't believe I told I must be sleepy Wink

I have had natural hair for four years now, and what I usually do with my natural hair is after I apply a light leave-in conditioner to my strands, I braid my hair is a crazy pattern using large, medium, and small braids. I cover my hair with a silk or satin bonnet and unbraid halfway in the morning. The result is a more refined curl with a slight wave pattern.

I seen a girl on YT, she did a video tutorial with a rod set curly Mohawk with braids on the sides. I wish I can remember for I can paste that link here.
